This Day in Rasslin’ History: A Raging Inferno

On this date in 1998, the WWF hosted one of their In Your House pay-per-views, Unforgiven.  While the main event saw Dude Love defeat World Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin via disqualification, the event was significant for a few other reasons.  Firstly, it was the very first pay-per-view that used the WWF’s now-famous scratch logo.  Prior to this point, all promotional material for upcoming shows still featured the New Generation block logo.  Another notable first that transpired at Unforgiven was the original inferno match, pitting The Undertaker against his half-brother Kane.

The famous firsts didn’t end there, either.  Unforgiven also featured the inaugural evening gown match, one that saw Luna Vachon defeat Sable by disrobing her.  A number of high-profile feuds also culminated at Unforgiven, including the New Age Outlaws war with the Legion of Doom for the Tag Team Titles.  Triple H defended the European Championship at the show against Owen Hart, and the Nation of Domination suffered a crucial loss to Faarooq, Ken Shamrock, & Steve Blackman.  In a battle of the expresses, the New Midnight Express (with Jim Cornette) notched a victory over the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express.
