Ghastly Gimmicks: The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea

Every Tuesday, we’ll take a look at an outlandish character from wrestling’s days gone by.  Sometimes laughable, sometimes revolting, and always preposterous, they’re part of what makes pro rasslin’ so great.  Ranging from slightly peculiar to downright ludicrous, these are the wrestlers that time has rightly forgotten.

The Artist Formerly Known as Prince....Iaukea.

In this inaugural edition of Pro Rasslin’s Ghastly Gimmicks, we remember The Artist Formerly Known as Prince…Iaukea.  This is how Tony Schiavone said his name every single week.  The Artist Formerly Known as Prince…(que the crickets)…Iaukea.  I don’t think it needs to be stated that the character was based entirely around singer/songwriter Prince, but I suppose there’s a chance someone who didn’t see the gimmick first-hand would have a hard time believing that this was the case.  Accompanied by Paisley (Sharmell Sullivan, pictured to the right), The Artist found mild success in WCW.  Prior to being saddled with this gimmick, back in the days when he was the artist still known as Prince Iaukea, he had a notable feud with WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho, although he never ended up with the upper hand on the Lion Heart.  He did, however, enjoy a TV Title reign, sandwiched between Lord Steven Regal and the Ultimo Dragon in the lineage.  Once he adopted the Prince gimmick, he went on to win the Cruiserweight Championship twice, although this speaks more to the lack of prestige the belt carried than it does the success of The Artist.  Today, the former Prince Iaukea works as a professional stuntman.  His Hollywood credits include Scream 2, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Bowfinger.
