This Day in Rasslin’ History: Dumpster Diving

On this date in 1998, the Road to WrestleMania was set in place for the WWE Tag Team titles. When a scheduled match between Chainsaw Charlie and Cactus Jack went awry, the New Age Outlaws hit the stage and sent both competitors sailing to the floor inside of a dumpster.  This led to a feud that saw Funk and Foley teaming up against their common enemies, Tag Team Champions Roaddogg Jesse James and Bad Ass Billy Gunn.  The feud culminated at WrestleMania XIV, where the two teams faced off in a dumpster match with the Tag Team Championships on the line.  Charlie and Jack won the match, but not with out controversy.  Ultimately, the titles were vacated due to the wrong dumpster being used.

Possibly the bigger story for the Outlaws on that February 2nd came later in the night.  During the main event, which saw “Stone Cold” Steve Austin take on The Roaddogg, DX hit the ring to attack The Texas Rattlesnake.  Shawn Michaels was in a bitter rivalry with Austin at the time, so the run-in was nothing unexpected, although it did have long standing implications.  During the assault, Chainsaw Charlie and Cactus Jack came to Austin’s aid, running DX off and setting the wheels in motion for an 8-man tag at the following Pay-Per-View, No Way Out of Texas.  The match marked the first teaming of Triple H with the New Age Outlaws, an alliance that would prove to be the foundation for the expanded D-Generation X stable that would become a staple of the WWE’s Attitude Era.
